The following are several reasons to consider hiring (or becoming) a formally trained music therapist:

  • Music therapists have specialized music therapy training and credentials and are the only professionals qualified to provide music therapy services.
  • Music therapy is supported by a broad research base, in which its effectiveness has been proven in the treatment of a variety of medical conditions, mental illnesses, developmental disabilities, and conditions associated with aging.
  • Music therapists are trained in all aspects of music as a treatment tool and therefore would elicit maximum patient benefits.
  • The Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) recognizes music therapy as a professional service, separate from other professional services.
  • Most facilities recognize the importance of proper credentialing of its professional staff.
  • A Board Certified Music Therapist is a graduate of one of the more than 70 colleges or universities with music therapy programs approved by the American Music Therapy Association (AMTA). Each has also completed a six-month internship in a chosen specialty before taking the national board exam described below. In order to maintain that certification, the music therapist completes 100 continuing music therapy education units every five years or prepares for and retakes the exam.
  • An independent organization known as the Certification Board for Music Therapists (CBMT) administers the national music therapy certification examination, which is officially recognized by the National Commission on Certifying Agencies. The examination measures the individual's skills, knowledge, and ability to engage in professional music therapy practice. In addition, the CBMT tracks continuing music therapy education units in order to recertify qualifying music therapists.
